Irion and Chantry are masterful at championships in Iowa
STEPHEN CHANTRY (M65 800m and 1500m champion)
It was a well run meet and it was great to see old track friends after such a long break due to the pandemic. Lots of great races with some deep fields of competition. I’ve had numerous and sometimes gut busting victories in the past. Suffice it to say that this past weekend I was able to enjoy two easy victories.
GLENN IRION (M65 High Jump champion)
I had never won a national championship at any level in the high jump prior to this year. I trained harder and smarter than I have since I was in open competition in an effort to win this time around. Although I am still working full time, I put extra hours into both training and studying to improve my jumping. The best part of the meets is that despite being very competitive, we are very friendly and helpful to each other. People who have been competing for 20+ years still go out of their way to make newbies feel welcome and always have good advice for their competitors. Over the course of each five years we see different people move in and out of our age brackets, yet make time to watch and encourage each other when we have the chance. We also have cases where we are the same age and always compete against each other. We can also see each other’s results on the MastersRankings website to use as motivation! The most important reason for participating in masters events is that being competitive motivates us to stay in excellent physical condition and set ourselves up for healthy “senior years."
