USATF Virginia athletes delivered an exceptional performance at the 2026 USATF Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held July 16-19 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The championships, which attracted 1,719 athletes from all 50 states, were significantly impacted by poor air quality caused by the Canadian wildfires. Originally scheduled as a four-day meet, the competition was effectively condensed into two days as organizers moved some events to the adjacent indoor track, revised the competition schedule, and canceled others due to unsafe air quality. Despite the challenging conditions, 38 USATF Virginia athletes combined to compete in 100 events at the national championships.
The meet was highlighted by an outstanding team performance from Pony Express TFC, which finished seventh in the men's team standings, ninth in the combined standings, and 11th in the women's team standings, establishing itself as one of the nation's premier masters clubs.
Individually, Ronald Humphrey (Unattached) produced one of the most dominant performances of the championships, capturing five M65-69 national titles in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 300m Hurdles, and Long Jump.
Pony Express athletes earned an impressive collection of national titles. Jim Sharps won four M80-84 titles as he captured the 80m Hurdles, 200m Hurdles, Long Jump, and Triple Jump. Micheal Hanks swept the M60-64 High Jump and Triple Jump, while Carmella Marshall captured the W50-54 200m title and Dana Hayden won the W45-49 1500m. Pony Express TFC also won the W70-74 4x100m Relay national championship.
Additional Virginia national champions included David Hood (Wahoo Track and Field), who won the M60-64 Pole Vault; Kevin McGuire (Blacksburg Striders), who captured the M60-64 1500m title; Rob Gritzer (Unattached), who won the M25-29 400m; and Travis Henderson (Unattached), who claimed the M30-34 100m championship.
Virginia athletes added numerous additional podium finishes. Carmella Marshall earned a silver medal in the W50-54 100m and a bronze medal in the 400m. Michelle Betz (Unattached) collected silver medals in the W45-49 Discus Throw and Javelin Throw, while Raymond Funkhouser (Pony Express TFC) was runner-up in both the M75-79 5000m Race Walk and 10 km Race Walk. Jill Cypress (Pony Express TFC), Jim Sharps, Linda Harper (Pony Express TFC), Micheal Hanks, Ignacio Moore (Blacksburg Striders), the Blacksburg Striders M50-54 4x800m Relay, and the Pony Express TFC W70-74 4x400m Relay also earned silver medals.
Bronze medals were captured by Diana Daniels (Pony Express TFC), who finished third in the W70-74 100m, 200m, and High Jump; Willie Spruill (Pony Express TFC) in the M65-69 100m; and Carmella Marshall, who added a third-place finish in the W50-54 400m.
Despite the challenging conditions and a significantly altered competition schedule, USATF Virginia athletes returned home with an outstanding collection of national titles, podium finishes, and one of the nation's top-performing masters clubs.
