Peyton and Samaha are golden at national masters championships in Iowa
Virginia results scoreboard
On Sunday the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships concluded in Ames, Iowa. Nearly 900 athletes from 48 states competed in the championships. Athletes ranging in age from 30 to 98 competed against peers similar in age in 5-year age divisions.
Virginia members won a total of six championship medals (for their top three finishes). The headliners of the meet for the Virginia members were the gold medal performances by
Stanley Peyton, Jr.
of Harrisonburg, VA and
Richard Samaha
(Colonial Road Runners) of Williamsburg.
Peyton, 32, won the 800m (1:58.34) and 1500m (4:23.69) in the men's 30-34 division. He also finished third in the 400m running 51.62.
Samaha, 61, captured the 2000m Steeplechase title in the 60-64 division. He also finished fifth in the 1500m running 5:11.79.
Winning two silver medals in the 40-44 division (10,000m and 3000m steeplechase) was
Robert Flanigan
, 43, of South Chesterfield .
Linda Kelly
, 59, of Williamsburg placed fourth (Shot Put), fifth (Weight Throw), and sixth (Discus and Hammer) in the women's 55-59 division.
