Humphrey Wins Four Titles at USATF Masters Indoor Championships in Chicago

The 2024 USATF Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships concluded on Sunday (26-Mar) in Chicago.  15 members of USATF Virginia competed in 33 events during the four-day competition that started on Thursday. 

USATF Virginia member athletes won 10 national titles and earned 21 visits to the awards podium for finishing in the top three in their event.

Winning four of the ten national titles was Ronald Humphrey. Competing in the men's 65-69 division Humphrey, a three-time Virginia Athlete of the Year, won the 200m,(26.19) 400m (59.87), Long Jump (16-7¾), and Pentathlon (3658 pts.). He also finished second in the 60m Hurdles to earn his fifth trip to the awards podium. His time in the 200m scored 91.16 on the age-graded scoring tables. Scores of over 90 are classified as world-class performances. He was the only Virginia athlete to score over 90.

Winning three national titles was Diane Kovats. Kovats (Legacy Track and Field) earned her titles in the women's 40-44 division as she won the Shot Put (36-7½), Weight Throw (36-10), and Superweight Throw (21-0).

Nicole Rhodes (Pony Express TF Club) won two titles in the women's 35-59 division as she captured the 1 mile (5:34.66) and 3000m (11:11.75).

The final national title was won by Raymond Funkhouser (Pony Express TF Club) in the men's 70-74 1 Mile Race Walk. Funkhouser stopped the clock at 10:19.86. He also earned a silver medal for his second place finish in the 3000m Race Walk (19:51.17).

Other athletes with multiple visits to the award podium for their top three placings were: Linda Harper (W70 - 2nd Shot Put; 3rd Weight Throw), Sheldon Johnson Sr. (M60 - 2nd Superweight Throw; 3rd Weight Throw), Stanley Peyton Jr. (M35 - 2nd 800m; 3rd 1 Mile), and Claudia Rankins (W70 - 3rd 400m; 3rd Shot Put).

Athletes scoring over 80% on the age grading tables (indicating their performances were classified as national-class) were:
