Full championship results

Fifteen (15) members of USATF Virginia recently competed in the NCAA Division 1 Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.  The championships, which concluded on Saturday (12-June) were held in the newly renovated Hayward Stadium on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Seven (7) of the Virginians earned first team all-American honors by way of their top eight finishes.

Leading the way for Virginians was Trevor Stewart (North Carolina A&T; senior) of Spotsylvania who finished fourth in the 400m and anchored the NCA&T 4x400m relay to the national title.  In the 400m Stewart ran 44.96 to earn 6 points for his team.  The race was won by his teammate Randolph Ross who ran 43.85; the fourth fastest time in collegiate history.  Stewart and Ross led their Aggies relay squad to a convincing win as they stopped the clock at 3:00.96.  Stewart, the 2019 USATF Virginia Athlete of the Year, ran the anchor leg in a time of 44.17.  Stewart scored a total of 7.5 team points as the Aggies finished third (tied with Alabama) in the team standings with 31 points.  Stewart graduated from South County High School in 2016.

Stewart's teammate Javonte' Harding of Prince George earned 1st team all-American honors as a member of the fourth place 4x100m relay.  Just a freshman, he earned second team all-American honors in the 200m and 100m. In the 200m he finished ninth running 25.49 (note: he ran 20.22 in the semi-finals).  His time of 20.22 in the sea was just .01 seconds slower than his career best.  In the 100m he was tenth in a time of 10.22.  He missed making the nine-person final by .01 seconds.  Harding is a 2020 graduate of Prince George High School.

Micaiah Harris (Univ. of Texas; junior) of Virginia Beach finished fourth in the 200m and was a member fourth place 4x100m relay team.  In the 200m he ran 20.26. Harris is a 2017 graduate of Western Branch High School.

Rounding out the men's first team all-Americans was Derek Johnson (University of Virginia; junior) of Leesburg.  The 2018 graduate of Tuscarora High School finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase running a career best time of 8:32.95 (note: on Sunday 13-June he lowered his best to 8:28.72).

The leading lady for the USATF Virginia members was Faith Ross (University of Kentucky; senior) of Chesapeake.  Ross, a 2016 Western Branch High grad, finished sixth in the 400m hurdles, tenth in the 100m hurdles, and helped her team to an eighth place finish in the 4x400m relay.  In the 400m hurdles she ran a career best time of 56.49.  Her previous best of 56.69 came two days earlier in the semi-final round.  In the 100m hurdles she stopped the clock at 12.94 seconds in the semi-final round to just miss making the finals by .01 seconds.  She was also just .01 seconds off her career best time of 12.93.

Picking up a seventh place finish in the discus throw was Essence Henderson (Virginia Tech; sophomore) of Blacksburg.  Henderson threw a career best mark of 57.72m (189-4) to earn her first all-American honor.  Her previous best was 55.66m (182-7) from the East Regional Preliminary Round two weeks earlier.

Lauren Hoffman (Duke; junior) of Haymarket ran a leg on the seventh place 4x400m relay.  She also finished 10th in the 400m hurdles running 57.91. She was just .27 seconds shy of making the nine-person final.  Hoffman is a 2017 graduate of Battlefield High School.
