Virginia results scoreboard On March 16 twenty-eight (28) athletes from USATF Virginia competed in the USATF Masters 8 km Championships held as part of the Towne Bank 8 km in Virginia Beach. A total of 168 athletes from 24 states competed in the championships with a total of $10,000 awarded in prize money. Two Virginians ran to national titles in their age divisions with four others earning top three finishes. David Angell, 42, l (Blue Ridge, VA / Roanoke Valley Elite ) won the men's 40-44 title for the third straight year and Suzanne Gibson, 72, (Murfreesboro, NC / Colonial Road Runners) lead a 1-2-3 Virginia sweep in the women's 70-74 division. She stopped the clock at 46:39. Barbara Biasi, 71, (Yorktown, VA / Colonial Road Runners) and Judith Robertson, 72, (South Chesterfield, VA / Tri-Cities Roadrunners) finished second and third, respectively. In the women's 65-69 division, Kathleen Doswell, 69, (Columbia, VA) and Patricia Travis, 67, (Williamsburg, VA / Colonial Road Runners) finished second and third, respectively running 45:10 and 47:07. The top Virginia performance was turned in by Angell. Angell, the 2018 USATF Virginia Masters LDR Athlete of the Year as well as the USATF (national) Masters Grand Prix winner in the 40-44 division, won the 40-44 division in a time of 25:40. His age graded score of 87.58% was the best turned in by the Virginia athletes. The top women's score was turned in by Karla Havens, 57, (Shacklefords, VA, Colonial Road Runners) with a score of 82.95%. Five others scored over 80% (the threshold for performances considered to be national class performances). Others scoring over 80% were Richard Samaha (61, Williamsburg, VA / Colonial Road Runners) 85.08%; Keith Schumann (48, Williamsburg, VA / Colonial Road Runners) 83.43%; Colin Munsey (53, Pearisburg, VA / Roanoke Valley Elite) 83.29%; Richard Grant (65, Suffolk, VA / Tidewater Striders) 82.08%; and Victor Flemming (40, Carrollton, VA / Colonial Road Runners) 82.08%.
In the team competition the Colonial Road Runners sent three teams to the awards podium for their top three finishes. The women's 60+ squad finished second while the women's 40+ and men's 40+ teams picked up third place finishes. In the men's 40+ team standings they just edged the Roanoke Valley Elite by a scant 1 second to earn their podium visit.
