The USATF Masters 5 km Championships were held on Saturday (17-Aug) in Atlanta.  The championships were part of the America's Finest 5K. A total of 161 athletes from 25 states competed in the championships.

Representing Virginia at the championships was 2019 USATF Virginia LDR Athlete of the Year David Angell, 42 of Blue Ridge, VA

Having won the 5 km title last year in Atlanta and in 2017 in Syracuse, NY, Angell was looking to extend his national 5 km win streak to three.   And he did not disappoint as he crossed the line first to claim the overall win and the national title in the 40-44 division.  His time of 15:41 put him 14 seconds clear of runner-up Martin Wennblom of Alabama.  Having won the 8 km title in March this was Angell's second national title in 2019  and he currently leads the national masters Grand Prix (men's 40-44 division) with 480 points. He also has second place finishes at the national cross country championships in February and 10 km championships in April.  He is seeking his third consecutive Grand Prix title having won last year and in 2017.

Angell's age-graded score of 88.66 was 10th best among the 115 men that competed.  It was one of his top five scores during his masters career.
