Virginia Athletes Set To Compete At National Championships in South Carolina & Pennsylvania

On Saturday, 116 athletes of all ages from USATF Virginia will compete in national cross country championships being held in South Carolina and Pennsylvania. 
 
The USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships will take place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for athletes ages 7-18.  Over 3400 athletes are entered and will compete for national titles in 6 divisions (8 & under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18).  Meanwhile, theUSATF National Club Cross Country Championships will be held in Bethlehem, Pa. for Open and Masters (ages 40+) athletes.   A record 1900 athletes are entered with 4 races to be contested (Open Men 10 km, Open Women 6 km, Masters Men 10 km, and Masters Women 6 km).  While the event focuses on team competition it also serves as the USA Cross Country 10 km (men) and 6 km (women)Championships for individuals.
 
At the Junior Olympic championships 99 athletes and 6 teams from Virginia are entered.  Athletes qualified for the national championships through the Virginia Association Championships on November 23.  The top 25 finishers in each race on Saturday will earn All-American status and the coveted Junior Olympic All-American hat.
 
Individual athletes who won the Virginia Association Championship in November and will be looking to compete near the front of their races are;

  • Julia Wood (15-16 girls)
  • Sheldon Harris (17-18 boys)
  • Emily Allen (17-18 girls)
The Richmond Track & Field Club has 6 teams entered with hopes of a top 3 podium finish in the 15-16 girls, 15-16 boys, 17-18 girls, and 17-18 boys races.  Last year they were second in the 17-18 boys and girls divisions and third in the 15-16 girls.

Open & Masters Athletes Will Compete At the Club Championships in in Pennsylvania 
While the youth are running in South Carolina, 17 athletes from Virginia are scheduled to compete at the National Club Championships on Lehigh University's historic course; site of three NCAA national championships.  In the Open Men's race, the Charlottesville-based Ragged Mountain Running team will toe the line against 70 other teams from around the nation.  They are lead by former University of Virginia All-American Sean Keveren.  Virginia Tech's Thomas Curtain, the 2013 ACC 5000m Champion, is entered and will run unattached.  In the open women's race, 2013 Roanoke College grad,Carmen Graves will toe the line also running unattached. Graves burst onto the national scene in June when she ran 9:47.27 in the 3000m steeplechase to make the finals at the USA Championships in Sacramento.
