The USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships began yesterday (24-Jul) in Lawrence, Kansas with sixteen (16) athletes and three (3) relay teams from the Virginia association scheduled to compete at the championships that will run through Sunday.  The competition, expected to draw 8,000 competitors, is taking place at Rock Chalk Park on the campus of the University of Kansas.

The Virginia athletes qualified to compete in Lawrence by finishing in the top five in their events at the USATF Region 3 championships that were held in Greensboro, North Carolina two weeks ago.

Athletes finishing in the top eight in their events in Lawrence will receive championship medals and all-American hats during a special awards ceremony approximately 90 minutes after their event has concluded.

At last year’s championships in Sacramento, Calf. Virginia athletes visited the awards ceremony six times led by the bronze medal performance by Shatia Hubbard (MVP TC) in the 17-18 girls triple jump.

Looking ahead, the Rose siblings (Michaela, Michail and Michailyn) all come into the meet with either #1 or #2 seeds in their events.  The seed marks are based on the athletes’ performances at their regional competition.  In the 11-12 boys division Michail Rose is seeded first in the high jump, second in the 80m hurdles, and sixth in the long jump.  His older sister Michaela Rose is the #1 seed in the 13-14 girls 800m and #2 in the 400m.  Michailyn Rose, the youngest of the siblings, is the #2 seed in the 9-10 girls 800m and #8 in the 1500m.  Michael Rose, Jr., the oldest Rose, is the #18 seed in the 17-18 boys 200m and the #27 seed in the triple jump.

Zoi Betties (Fredericksburg, Va.) competes today in the 15-16 girls 3000m race walk.  She won the the region 3 championships in Greensboro two weeks ago and is entered with the #3 time.  Betties finished sixth in Sacramento last year and earlier this year finished third at the USATF Hershey Youth Indoor Championships in New York.

Also today, Erin Higgins (Tachyon TC) will complete day 2 of the 17-18 girls heptathlon.  She came in with the #4 seed and after the first day of competition was in sixth place.  Last year Higgins finished 12th in the 15-16 division.
