Thomas Curtin (Leesburg, Va.) and Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, Va.) ran to strong finishes at the 2014 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships on December 13.  The  event was held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

Over 1750 athletes competed in the four events - Open Women (6 km), Open Men (10 km), Masters Women (6 km), Masters Men (10 km) - making it the largest club championships in history.  The previous record was 1131 athletes when the event was held in Seattle in 2011.  In addition to the club championships, the meet's main focus, the races also serve as USA championships for individuals.

Curtin, 21, a senior Sociology major at Virginia Tech finished 19th in a very talented and deep field of 572 athletes.  His time was 29:57 over the 10 km course.  "I felt like the event went really well, it was my first time doing this race, stated Curtin. "This was actually my first real race in almost a year, due to injuries, so I was a little nervous about the sort of shape I was in. I felt like it went really well, especially considering I haven't raced in a while, I'm looking forward to the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons and putting the Hokie singlet back on."

Sean Keveren (Charlottesville, Va.) finished 74th to lead the Charlottesville-based Ragged Mountain Racing Team to a 30th place finish in the field of 68 teams from across the country.  Keveren's time was 30:54.  The other team scorers were; Thomas Adam (Charlottesville; 226th place), Charlie Hurt (Richmond; 245th place), Lee Gabler (Charlottesville; 301st place), and David Hryniak (Charlottesville; 392nd place).

The first Virginia association athlete in the Open Women's race was Carmen Graves, 23, a 2013 graduate of Roanoke College, finished 64th running 21:17 for 6 km.  Also finishing in the top 100 was Kathleen Lautzenheiser (Richmond, Va. / Colonial Road Runners), 22, who finished 99th in a time of 21:53.  The Runner's Retreat Elite (Winchester) placed 33rd with 881 points.  Their scorers were Megan Roberts (Timberville; 244th place), Candace DeLong (Stephens City; 257th place), Elizabeth Mumaw (Berryville; 268th place), Karly Knechtel (Winchester; 280th place), and Courtney Crandell (White Post; 312th place).

In the Masters Men's 10 km race, Kevin White, 47, of Virginia Beach and Gregory Dawson, 49, of Williamsburg finished 44th and 70th, respectively, in the men's 45-49 division. Both represented the Colonial Road Runners.  In the Masters Women's 6 km race, Susan Hagel, 41, of Norfolk finished 47th in the women's 40-44 division.  She also represented the Colonial Road Runners.
