Chantry, Johnson, Malone, Mines Win National Titles At Masters Championships in North Carolina

3/26/2015

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Over the weekend twenty-one (21) athletes from the Virginia Association competed in the USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in Winston-Salem, NC.  The athletes competed in a total of thirty-two (32) events during the three day meet held at the JPL Fast Track complex.

Leading the Virginia efforts were Stephen Chantry (Williamsburg, VA / Colonial Road Runners), Sheldon Johnson, Sr. (Newport News, VA), Joseph Malone (Virginia Beach, VA), and Marquita Mines (Doswell, VA / Pony Express TF Club) who each won national titles; with Chantry and Malone earning two gold medals each.

Despite Achilles surgery surgery on February 6, Stephen Chantry, 60, was able to win the M60 1 mile and 3000m titles in convincing fashion. In the 3000m on Friday he ran 10:55.60 to win by over sixteen seconds.  He then came back on Saturday to win the 1 mile in a time of 5:26.90 over Thomas Hartshorne of New York.  Chantry has now won 13 national titles (indoors, outdoors, road) as an individual and also won the 1500m and 3000m at the 2010 World Masters Indoor Championships.  “Competing in NC was wonderful a wonderful experience, especially since I was not sure how I would recover from my surgery last month,” offered Chantry. “Although I am very pleased to have won the 3000m and the Mile, I am still not fully back to my racing form yet.  I hope to be completely ready  in time for the World Championships in Lyon, France later this year.”

Sheldon Johnson, Sr., 52, won the M50 Weight Throw with a heave of 17.35m/56'11". He outdistanced eight other competitors for the win and won by just 8 inches over Victor DeMarines of Massachusetts.  Johnson, Sr. also won the silver medal in the Superweight Throw with a throw of 8.53m/28' 0".  This time it was DeMarines who won the gold with a throw of 9.00m/29’6”.

Joseph Malone, 33, reached the top spot on the awards podium twice as he won M30 titles in the Shot Put (10.80m/35'5¼"and Superweight Throw (5.910m/19'4¾”).  He also finished second in the Weight Throw with a throw of 11.39m/37'4½”

Marquita Mines, 31, won the M30 Long Jump and finished second in the 60m.  In the Long Jump she soared 4.78m/15'8¼" and her time in the 60m was 7.88.  Mines 60m race can be seen here.
