Pierce Sets U.S. Record at Masters Indoor Championships

3/17/2014

Seven USATF Virginia athletes recently competed in the USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships held March 14-16 in Boston with two of them winning gold medals and the title "national champion."  The championships were held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College. 920 athletes ranging in age from 30 to 100 competed in 5-year masters divisions.

Leading the way for the Virginia athletes was Erika Pierce, 42, of Charlottesville.  Pierce, who competed for the University of Virginia in the early 90s, broke her own U.S. record in W40  Pentathlon.  She scored a total of 3254 points to break the record she set at last year's championship in Landover, Maryland by 13 points.  She also won the 60m hurdles (10.29), finished 2nd in the shot put (8.73m / 28' 7"), and picked up two third place finishes in the 60m (8.47) and Long Jump (4.52m / 14' 10").  "The thing that I love about competing in the Pentathlon is that you can have an off day in one event, but make up the points in the other ones, stated Pierce. "This year, it was my effort in the Long Jump that put me over last year's point total. I also love the fact that in track you are really competing with yourself. I've always enjoyed the challenge of beating my own personal bests."

Joining Pierce on the top of the awards podium was Sheldon Johnson, 51, of Newport News.  Johnson won the M50 weight throw with a heave of 17.63m (57' 10").   Johnson's victory was his second in a row as he defend the title he won at last year's championship.

Also reaching the podium from Virginia were:
2. Walter Bass (Gladys, VA)  -  M70 shot put (12.27m / 40' 3¼")
3. Ross McDonald (Midlothian, VA) - M55 shot put (10.88m / 35' 8½")
